Instruction

OPEN STUDIO, a monthly session for painters in watercolor and Chinese brush painting. Each class includes exercises and  demonstrations in watercolor and Chinese brush painting. Individual instruction and critique given during each session.

– 4 class session for $215 for session, consisting of three – 4 hour classes and one – 7 hour/full day class. Pricing here works out to be $45 per 4 hour class and $80 for the full day.

 – A la carte classes: each 4 hour class is $60; full day is $100.

Private lessons are available in Chinese brush painting, watercolor, oil painting, and porcelain. $50 per hour.

Suggested materials  I recommend appear below.

WATERCOLOR

PIGMENTS Lemon yellow or a cool yellow (Hansa), Winsor yellow or Azo yellow*, permanent alizarin crimson*, permanent rose, Winsor red or quinacridone red*, cerulean blue (avoid” hue”)*, cobalt blue*, ultramarine blue*, antwerp or prussian blue*, raw sienna, burnt sienna, brown madder*pthalo green or viridian green*, titanium white. Those colors with asterisk are the most important.

WATERCOLOR PAPER/BRUSHES/PALETTE  Good paper is essential; don’t buy cheap watercolor paper!

140 lb. cold press paper (Arches takes the most abuse; avoid watercolor paper blocks); flats –  a 11/2 or 2 inch flat wash brush, 1 inch flat brush (stiff),1/2 inch flat brush (stiff) Robert Simmons is a good brand for synthetic flats; round brushes – three brushes in range of sizes – #3,#8, #14  or similar sizes (Lowell Cornell brand is good and inexpensive), small natural sponge, paper towels or terrycloth paint rag, water container (pint size plastic container with wide mouth opening), Pike palette or “Holbein” type palette (any type of palette, a “butcher plate”, or a white plate will do).  Also, bring a sketchbook or some paper for drawing, a pencil (2b), and kneaded or white eraser.

CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING MATERIALS LIST

Materials for Chinese brush painting can be purchased from  Oriental Art Supply (OAS). I will supply various types of paper during class. Paper can also be purchased from me for use outside class. I will have pigments to get you started.
